Reiki is a spiritual practice developed in 1922 by Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui. It uses a technique commonly called palm healing as a form of complementary and alternative medicine and is sometimes classified as oriental medicine by some professional bodies. Through the use of this technique, practitioners believe that they are transferring healing energy in the form of ki through the palms.

There are two main branches of Reiki, commonly referred to as Traditional Japanese Reiki and Western Reiki. Within both Traditional and Westernised forms of Reiki, there are three forms of degrees, commonly referred to as the First, Second, and Master/Teacher degree. According to Reiki practitioners and Masters, at First Degree, a Reiki practitioner is able to heal himself and others, at Second Degree is able to heal others distantly (commonly called distant healing) with the use of specialised symbols, and at Master level (specifically Master/Teacher level) is able to teach and attune others to Reiki.

Reiki is a process of channelling energy through the Reiki  practitioner to the patient.  It implies that the practitioner consciously invokes the energy flow and willingly becomes the channel for its outflow in a specified direction.  So the first step in Reiki is the invocation to the past Reiki Masters and all the angels and beings of light to be present and to assist the channel in healing the patient being treated (the direction of flow) for his own “highest good”(the purpose of the flow).

This invocation to the Reiki masters draws the energy from the Universe and fills the body of the practitioner.  It passes through all the Chakras of the practitioner, cleansing, healing, purging and destroying energy blocks and then flows out his or her hands to the direction specified. As a result of the flow the practitioner feels a great cleansing.  He is healed before he begins to heal.

The  Reiki practitioner can direct the energy to further heal his self and can use the hand positions on his body.  The Reiki practitioner in this instance is both the channel and the patient.   This is often recommended for those who have been initiated into Reiki for the first time for a continuous period of twenty one days.  However, when the Reiki practitioner feels ill, he can resort to self healing using this technique.

Before actually proceeding to transmit energy to the patient, all Reiki practitioners are adjured to “earth” themselves.  ‘Earthing’ protects the practitioner from the disease or complaint of the patient.  The negative energies being removed are harmlessly transmitted into the earth.  ‘Earthing’ is a special visualization technique that is taught to practitioners during initiation into Reiki I and II.

Once the intelligent Reiki energy is ready, the practitioner begins to feel a tingling sensation in the hands.  This may be felt as warmth, tingling, pins and needles, a burning sensation, a sensation of cold or of electric current.   The quality of the sensation varies in accordance with the type of patient being dealt with and the nature of the complaint.

Several scientific explanations of these sensations have been attempted.  It is said that the skin of the practitioner’s hands comes in contact with the superficial tissues of the patient’s body.  However this does not explain the sensation that is felt even when distance Reiki is done.   Another explanation that is often offered is that the Reiki energy is being polarized when it enters the world through the hands of the practitioner and hence it acts upon the sense receptors and gives rise to tingling sensations.  The variations in sensations are dependent on the practitioner’s sensitivity, the time, place etc.

Whatever may be scientific explanation that is sought, the fact remains that Reiki practitioners universally experience this sensation in the hands.

Reiki flows equally from both hands and the quality of flow is uniform. If you treat a patient with one hand, he will receive half the energy he will receive if treated with both hands. The quality will not be altered.  The quantity will be halved.

It is also possible to treat two patients simultaneously using one hand for each patient. However, in my personal opinion, the Reiki practitioner must ensure that proper earthling is done so that the problems of one patient do not impact the other through a process of transmission. The practitioner must be very skilful and experienced to attempt this.

Reiki is an intelligent benevolent energy.  It has no harmful side effects.  When Reiki is taken for the first time, a physiological healing process begins.  The accumulated toxins in the body are collected and purged out of the system.  Some patients may experience this as a loosening of the bowels or an emotional outburst.  Some patients have been known to experience nausea, vomiting and even excessive sweating.  Yet others could complain about the intensification of the problem.  It should be noted that this is temporary phenomenon that will disappear as soon as the toxins are eliminated from the body and the body begins to heal.

Reiki does not demand a diagnosis.  Reiki energy is intelligent and capable of making its own diagnosis.  It heals at a level that is deeper than the physical body.  Reiki sees disease as an energy block. It identifies the blocks and proceeds to eliminate them. Once the blocks are destroyed, the energy flows undeterred. The smooth flow of energy restores the patient to health.
